Ride2Recovery – Remembering 9/11
In honor of the ten year anniversary of 9/11, Ride2Recovery 9/11 American Challenge will have a full field of 350 participants, 85% of these are active duty or veterans with combat related injuries. This ride consists of an eight day, 500 mile bicycle ride beginning in Liberty Park, NJ, passing through Lancaster on their way to Shanksville, PA (site of the Flight 93 Memorial) and then finishing their trip at the Pentagon in Washington DC.
The majority of the cyclists are combat wounded veterans, some with visible wounds and loss of limbs, others with hidden scars such as severe PTSD. All of their lives were dramatically changed as a result of 9/11 and then again changed when they entered the cycling program at Walter Reed and Bathesda. Many of them say they are starting to get their life back because of this program.
The cyclists will be escorted by Legion Riders and will be hosted along the route by members of the American Legion Family (Legion, Auxiliary, SAL, and Riders) as well as members of the communities. They plan to arrive at Willow Valley on September 13 between 2 and 3 p.m. They will depart Willow Valley at 5:30 p.m. for dinner at the American Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road. Schultz Transportation has graciously offered to transport the participants to and from the American Legion Post 34.
The majority of this ride will be in Pennsylvania. Nourishment stations will be established along the route. For more information log onto www.ride2recovery.com .
